Scientific Research Institute of Theory and History of Architecture and Urban Planning, branch of the Central Institute for Research and Design of the Ministry of Construction and Housing and Communal Services of the Russian Federation

The origin of the Scientific Research Institute of Theory and History of Architecture and Urban Planning (NIITIAG) is connected to the Cabinet of Theory and History of Architecture, established in 1933. Since 1944 the Cabinet has evolved into a full-fledged scientific institution. From that time its main function is the study of a wide range of fundamental historical and theoretical issues regarding architecture and urban planning in the context of culture of different countries and epochs.

The Institute's research on the history of architecture has been acknowledged on many occasions. Among others, it received the highest national awards – the State Award of the USSR and the State Award of the Russian Federation. The former has been given to the Institute in 1979, the latter – in 1992, 1998 (2 awards), 1999 and 2003.

The Institute’s studies are particularly focused on developing of the theory and techniques of conservation and restoration of architectural heritage. Much of its research is devoted to the role of historical traditions in modern architecture and urban planning. A comprehensive study of the architectural phenomena, trends and tendencies in world architecture of the 20th century is also of primary importance. Close attention is paid to the creative ideas of 21st-century architecture and urban planning.
